WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for What We Do in the Shadows Season 3, Episode 7, “The Siren,” now available on Hulu via FX.
In Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) haven’t been seeing eye to eye. They’re bickering over who should chair the Vampiric Council in New York, with no agreement in sight over who ought to truly lead. Sadly, as they split duties and continue their rivalry, this civil war deals Nadja a massive, heartbreaking loss.
It’s due to her being obsessed with Nandor, trying to overrule his executive orders as they alternate days as the leader. Nadja’s driven to use the Guide to flex her power, always belittling Nandor at every turn, but she’s neglecting her Nadja doll.
The doll houses her human soul, as she did die to become a vampire, and seeing as it reflects Nadja’s personality, has all her traits, looks like a miniature version of her and sounds like it too, it comes off like a sibling. Even Laszlo and Nandor have been in awe over how much it reflects Nadja since it first appeared in Season 2, making decisions and hating on the documentary crew just like Nadja would.
But in the interview session, as the doll’s grouped with Guillermo, she’s offended. She feels like a B-lister in the coven, with Nadja too busy for her, as well as the other vampires. She has no one to cuss out, train or play games with so she secretly leaves home, wanting to explore more of the Big Apple.
Nadja, who never got to be a mother, is hurt and rounds up the gang to go find her, and they discover the now-vengeful doll in a pastiche of Walmart. She’s angry over being mistreated and ignored, attacking Nandor physically before the soul jumps into a mannequin, then to a statue on the outside, and eventually into a giant float of a rat.
She launches profane rants at Nadja, calling her a failure, and as they all fight, Nandor ends up stabbing the rat. With the human soul about to eviscerate into nothingness, Nadja holds up the doll and asks for it to be the soul’s home once more — and hopefully its last one. She acknowledges what she’s done wrong and begs forgiveness, which she receives. That’s because while Nadja knows Laszlo is her significant other, it’s more physical than nuanced, and ultimately, no one gets her on a mental level like the doll.
After they reconcile, they give a caustic interview proving they’re not to be trifled with and they’re indeed a power couple once more. It doesn’t bode well for Guillermo and Nandor, both of whom they love bullying, and hints that Nadja will be using her doll’s wisdom and confidence to make a play for full leadership soon.
The first seven episodes of What We Do in the Shadows Season 3 are streaming now on Hulu via FX.
