Random: AGDQ’s Pokémon Crystal Speedrun Race Ended In A Written Apology To Bulbasaur

Pokemon

Awesome Games Done Quick, the yearly speedrunning stream, is currently happening on Twitch. They’re even on track to raise over $3 million — perhaps even approaching 2020’s record of $3.13 million — for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

We’ve already seen speedruns of Mega Man 2, Chicory: A Colorful Tale, and Sonic Adventure DX: Director’s Cut, but arguably the highlight today could have been the three-way Pokémon Crystal race that’s also a key item randomiser run.

What does that mean? Well, keizaron, shenanagans, and 360chrism all tried to beat the game (the main requirement is to beat Red), but with all the key items (like the bike, fishing rods, and S.S. Ticket) have all been shuffled. That makes it quite hard to complete the game in order, because several locations will require specific key items to access.

Proof

When the run was about two-thirds of the way through, shenanagans was in the lead, gym badge-wise — but then he made the mistake of badmouthing Bulbasaur, because apparently choosing Bulbasaur as a starter makes your speedrun significantly slower than the other two starters. “If we reach $900k [during the run], I’ll write a written apology,” he said — and the AGDQ staff added it as a milestone.

An hour later, keizaron won the race, beating the game in 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 39 seconds. 360chrism came second, with a time of 2:17:04, and then… well, then the chat came third, reaching that $900k milestone before shenanagans was able to finish, making him fourth place in a three-player race. Ouch.

So, now he has to apologise to Bulbasaur. In writing. Serves him right!
