Naomi Season 1 Won’t See Any Arrowverse Crossovers, Says Ava DuVernay

Naomi developer Ava DuVernay confirms the first season of The CW’s latest DC series will not feature any Arrowverse (or DCEU) crossovers.

DC’s Naomi will shine as a standalone star in the first season of her live-action television show on The CW, with series developer/co-executive producer/co-writer Ava DuVernay confirming that no crossovers with other existing programs are currently planned.

During a Naomi press event attended by CBR, Karama Horne (aka theblerdgurl) asked if there were plans for the show to cross over with any of the shows that make up The CW’s Arrowverse, or perhaps even the DC Extended Universe, considering the fact that the show’s first few episodes already cover a lot of material from the original Naomi comic book by Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker and Jamal Campbell.

“We got a lot of information in the… first two episodes, which means we get to make up new, cool things. So yes, that is exactly what’s happening… This thing is off and running. We can’t wait for you to see it,” DuVernay replied. “[I]n terms of crossovers, we’re not thinking about that right now. She’s on her own, she’s on her own path.”

Naomi‘s first batch of episodes make up what DuVernay refers to as the “Naomi-verse,” though she says that “we will see what happens.” For now, however, “we are really just focused [on Naomi], no crossover. You won’t see any crossover [in] Season 1, that’s a little spoiler. That’s a little breaking news I’ll share. Season 1, that’s not there. She is firmly in her story and we are singularly focused on that journey.”

Notably, a key element of Naomi McDuffie’s story is an early chance encounter with the Man of Steel himself, Superman. However, during a recent interview with Good Day Sacramento (via The Direct), Naomi star Kaci Walfall — who plays the titular character herself — strongly suggested that Naomi‘s Superman is not the same as the version currently played by Tyler Hoechlin on The CW’s Superman & Lois, which debuts its second season on the same day Naomi debuts its first. “I think that Naomi exists in her own universe, so Tyler Hoechlin who plays Superman in Superman & Lois was not on the set; but I’m excited for fans to see that take on Superman, especially in the first episode,” Walfall said.

Naomi premieres on The CW on Tuesday, Jan. 11.
