BLACKSAD returns to North America from Dark Horse Books

Creators Juan Diaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido‘s acclaimed series Blacksad returned last year with a new book, They All Fall Down – Part One, from French publisher Dargaud and English publisher Europe Comics. Now the first new Blacksad book in years is set to make it’s North American debut later this year in a new edition published by Dark Horse Books. The new edition of the book, the first chapter of a two-part storyline, is translated by Diana Schutz and Brandon Kander, with lettering by Tom Orzechowski and Lois Athena Buhalis.

Here’s how Dark Horse describes Blacksad: They All Fall Down – Part One:

In Blacksad: They All Fall Down • Part One, Detective Blacksad deals with the mob, the unions, and mid-century “master builder” Lewis Solomon, who plans to pave over New York City’s green spaces, come hell or high water. While Blacksad must navigate from the lofty world of 1950s theater all the way to the city’s seedy depths, Solomon looms above it all in pursuit of his own dreams—but is the cost too high? Meanwhile, Weekly finds himself in the hot seat just as an old flame comes back to burn his pal Blacksad!

The North American edition of They All Fall Down – Part One is the latest Blacksad book to come to the U.S. from Dark Horse. The publisher has brought the five previous entries in the series across the pond in three hardcover editions, the most recent of which, Amarillo, was released in 2014.

Canales & Guarnido’s Blacksad: Alors, tout tombe. Première partie has already received critical acclaim in Europe. The book was named an Angoulême 2022 Official Selection and is up for the Grand Prix award. The festival has been postponed until the spring due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, though new dates have yet to be announced. Previous books in the series have won Angoulême prizes in 2004 and 2006, along with Eisner wins in 2011, 2013, and 2015.

The Dark Horse Books hardcover of Blacksad: They All Fall Down – Part One is due out in U.S. comic shops on Wednesday, July 6th, 2022, with a wide release in bookstores on Tuesday, July 19th.
